Backpacking

 Troop 1 began a tradition of backpacking on the Appalachian Trail in the Spring of 2007.   Twice a year, since then, Troop 1 has hiked sections of the AT of about 30 miles each, completing the 200 miles between Little Gap, PA and the Kent, CT, including all of New Jersey and New York every 3-1/2 years.  A few of those trips are shown below.  Troop1 continues to introduce each new generation of incoming scouts to the joys and rigors of backpacking the AT.

In addition to local backpacking, high adventure crews of Troop 1 scouts have hiked the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch, the White Mountains of New Hampshire , the Haute Route across the French & Swiss Alps, Iceland's Laugavegur Trail , and the high routes of the Pyrenees in Spain and France.

Pawling, NY to Bulls Bridge, Kent, CT
November 9-10, 2024

Appalachian Trail Hike #34 from Pawling, NY to Kent, CT.  Troop 1 last hiked this section of the Appalachian Trail in the Spring of 2021. This section connects the eastern New York section of the AT to the Connecticut border. We crossed some beautiful, varied landscape of mountain ridges, forest, marsh and open farmland. During this 2-day, 1-night trip we hiked 20.9 miles over 2 days, with 1 night of tent camping at the Ten Mile River Campsite on the Housatonic River.
